History In The Making: LA Chapter Of The National Congress Of Black Women, Inc.
The Los Angeles chapter of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. is making history August 15 with its first West Coast Anniversary Installation and Awards luncheon, silent auction and exclusive unveiling of sculptures by Artis Lane who is the artist responsible for the Sojourner Truth Memorial that now rests at the U. S. Capitol Visitors Center, Emancipation Hall in Washington, D.C. The highly anticipated luncheon will be held at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, 200 South Pine Avenue, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Since 1984 the National Congress of Black Women has worked nationally and internationally as a nonprofit organization to carry on the mission of its founders, the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and the late Hon. C. Delores Tucker. The Los Angeles chapter is joining the fight and is dedicated to the educational, political, economic and cultural development of African American women and their families.
“Not only do we work for opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making positions in government, non-profit organizations and the private sector, but we are dedicated to enriching our community through our local initiatives, healthcare reform and military family support services, to name a few,” states Los Angeles Chair, Gwen Newman-Jones.
The National Congress of Black Women is proud that its members enjoy unparalleled networking opportunities at local, national and international levels, as well as access to power suites from Capitol Hill and the White House to corporate boardrooms. Not only are these women dedicated professionals, but they have made it their priority to only give the best of themselves and be the best, as is evident with the guest list and presenting artists at the First West Coast Anniversary Installation and Awards Luncheon.
August 15 promises to be an exciting historical afternoon for Los Angeles and the local chapter of the National Congress of Black Women. “Not only will we have some of the greatest guest speakers, but you have to be there to see the beautiful art available for the silent auction. With Florence LaRue, the lead singer of 5th Dimension, as the mistress of ceremony; guest speakers Dr. E. Faye Williams, the national chair of the National Congress of Black Women, and Dr. Bill Releford of the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Programs. There will be a host of other special guests. The afternoon is definitely one that everyone will enjoy,” says Judy Matthews, first vice chair.
In addition to the guest speakers, painter/sculptor Artis Lane, LAUSD Board Member Marguerite LaMotte, Congresswoman Laura Richardson, UCLA professor, author and poet Dr. Toni Yancey, and Dr. Bill Releford are the first organization’s honorees.
